Croatia, a beautiful crescent shaped country, is situated at crossway between Central Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. The country has been blessed with nature's bounty and many of its natural features have been categorized as UNESCO, world Heritage sites. The rich historical and cultural heritage of the country along with its geographical treasures attract a large number of visitors every year. Croatia is a country famous for its national parks. The treasure trove of nature that Croatia is, has given it ample opportunity of housing eight splendidly beautiful National Parks. Each National Park of Croatia has an uniqueness and beauty of its own, that sets it apart from the rest. Among these Croatian National Parks, the Plitvice Lakes fall under the category of a World Heritage Site.

The eight Croatian National Parks are:
Rinsjak National Park – Established in 1953, this is the oldest of all Croatian national Parks. Gorski Kotar, the most densely forested as well as the most mountainous part of Croatia, forms a home to this beautiful national park. Lying between the coastal and Continental parts of Croatia, the Rinsjak National Park has a combined climate. The National Park is a home to wide varieties of flora and fauna. Beech, fir, vanilla orchid and alpine snowball form the flora. While brown bear, roe deer and weasel are the major animals.
Brijuni National Park – the Brijuni National Parks are set in the beautiful islands of Brijuni on the Istria Peninsula. It is a National Park with a difference. A witness to the golden Austro – Hungarian Era, Brijuni islands are a home to a wide variety of plants and animals.
Plitvice Lakes- This spectacle has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A group of 16 small lakes interconnected by several big and small waterfalls. the region, due to its climate has lush vegetation and is a home to a large number of animals like the brown bear.
Sjeverni Velebit – Located near the Adriatic Sea, this stretch of land is one of the most untamed in the whole of Croatia. Down at the coasts the climate is Mediterranean, but as one goes up, continental climate replaces the pleasant Mediterranean climate.
Paklenica – the two canyons, Velica and Mala Paklenica add to the beauty of this National Park, situated in the southern side of Velbit.
Krka National Park – this unique Croatian National Park, follows the river Krka, from its source till it drains itself in the Adriatic.
Kornati National Park – Located in cetral Dalmatia, this beautiful piece of landmass is the most densely forested archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea.
Mljet National Park – Located on the western part of the serene island of Mljet, this Croatian National Park is accentuated by two bays. The National Park is built around two lakes named, Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero.
