Island of Korcula, Croatia

Situated at the crossroads between Central Europe and the Mediterranean Sea is the country of Croatia. The crescent shaped country of Croatia, by virtue of its location has the advantage of enjoying both Balkan as well as Mediterranean climate. Its geographical location has provided Croatia with breathtakingly beautiful mountains, springs, lakes and rivers. The island of Korcula, Croatia, is a crowning gem in the series of islands in the Adriatic Sea. Korcula is the sixth largest island of Croatia and is situated between Split and Dubrovnik. The island is located parallel to the Peljesac Peninsula.


The island derives its name from a fortified city located in its eastern coasts. The peculiarity of the island lies in its physical features. There is a mountainous region right in the center of the island. Klupca is the highest mountain peak, with a height of about 568 meters. The natural beauty of Korcula islands, is beyond any comparison. No nature lover can ignore the beckoning of the clear blue sea, surrounding the island. Tourists are attracted because of the wide variety of flora and fauna found in the Korcula Islands, Croatia. The variation in climate from Mediterranean to continental has led to the growth of lush green vegetation. Valleys and meadows, groves and vineyards accentuate the landscape of the Korcula islands. People can also enjoy hunting animals like pheasants, wild boar and hare.

Water activities like snorkeling and swimming in the azure water of the Adriatic is another option that the tourists have. Several beaches and coves, yet untouched by the ravages of civilization add to the glory of the Korcula islands.

The Korcula Islands, Croatia, is also a place rich in history. Ruled by the Greeks, the Romans, the Ilyrians, the Croatians and the Venetians, Korcula has a quaint blending of all these cultures. Several colorful fairs and festivals take place in this island during the summer months. The important festivities of Korcula islands include the Moreska and the Kumpanija sword dances.
